9. Fractions

9. Fractions

Romans used fractions but didn’t understand the concept of 2/3rds. They used 1/3 + 1/3= 2/3. If the Romans couldn’t understand it how can kids? (Well a lot of the time they don’t). Fractions don’t have to be scary though. Here are some questions to continually ask yourself and students in your classroom.

1.     What is a fraction?
2.     What is an equivalent fraction?
3.     What are lowest terms?
4.     What is a proper fraction?
5.     What is an improper fraction?

Reflection
·       Replacing the written symbols for fraction with physical objects can be easier for students to grasp.
·       Using an apple as a whole, then cutting it in half, quarters, the quarters into quarters and then holding the apple up all together. Doing the same thing with a banana and cutting it into third. Students will relate to this activity because a lot of the time they are told by their parents that they have to share their chocolate bar with their 2 other siblings.
