4. Subtraction- Many Different Faces

4. Subtraction- Many Different Faces

Main Problem

                       When Using Blocks
(Ex)1000        9 (100)+ 9 (10)+ 10 (1) = 1000
        -345    -  3 (100)+ 4 (10)+ 5 (1) = 345
         655        6 (100)+ 5 (10)+ 5 (1) = 655

When using just symbols students can get lost very easily. They forget which place value each column holds, hold to borrow and what happens when you have to carry numbers.

But when students use blocks they can easily put place value on the numbers they see.

Reflection of Reflection
·       Students learn in many different ways. Some students are very visual and this is when the blocks can really connect with them.
·       Carla in our class has a hard time connecting the signs and symbols of everyday math but when she works with the blocks the answer comes to her easily and without as much stress.
