15/3=5

The answer of 5 we all know at the University because we have been trained to decode these symbols. But how can this question be asked if a student is getting caught up with the symbols that they are seeing?

1.     If we take 15 apples and place them into 3 equal parts, what would be the answer?

2.     How many 3’s can you make from 15?

·       It is important to remind students that Zero (0) is always a number (#). While Nothing is not a number.
